It’s been a while since I’ve posted about life around the house. Part of it is that because of many of the rules put in place to protect children in foster care, I can only say so much, and the other part is that life is somewhat in a groove. And when you’re in a groove, not much changes from day to day. None the less, there are a few of you out there that have been following our lives that have expressed curiosity about how things are going.

Any time I talk to anyone about what Jessica and I are doing (and it’s often), it seems that I almost always get the same reaction: “We would foster, but. . . ” or “We’ve thought about it, but . . . ” [Read more…]
By now, if you’ve read the blog for more than a week, you’ve no doubt picked up on the fact that I like to throw numbers around in my titles. Part of it is because I’m not that creative, but the other part is so that, when I go back and look at our experiences, I can be reminded of the things we did (and hopefully accomplished). I often tell people that, as parents, we’re pretty lucky in this day and age. While we have to deal with a lot of new things, I think that we’re lucky enough to live in a time where we are allowed to relate to our kids and they with us. No longer is all music of the devil (a lot of it might be crap but it’s not of the devil) and we’re allowed to be wrong. Kids are encouraged to fail and get back up again and parents are allowed to say that they don’t know the answers to things. [Read more…]
Ok, there are more than two types. We’re humans, and it’s a pretty diverse group of people that choose to be foster parents. We all have the common bond that motivates us; the desire to help children; to give them a good, safe place where they can thrive and be who they are. We all want the best for the kids, no doubt about it. But how we go doing that is different for us all. [Read more…]
As I posted before, we had three boys come to stay with us on an emergency basis on Monday. At the time, the plan was for them to only stay two days and then they would be placed with a relative on Wednesday. But, as we’re finding out, things in the world of foster care rarely go as planned. We had been told this going into it and so, it was no real shock when the caseworker, after going to court today on behalf of these boys, asked us how long we would be willing to keep them.
Last Night at about 5:30, Jessica got a call from the foster agency. Three boys were in need of a home immediately on an emergency basis. Not much is known about the situation, other than the fact that they do apparently have family, and while they had been in the system, the case worker was rather surprised to see them in need again. It’s hard to go anywhere these days without running into a cliché or two. I mean, there are so many clichés out there that even clichés have clichés. To be honest, I get a bit tired of them. To me, they sometimes make me feel like the person using it just cannot come up with anything original to say. And, by their very definition, the reason they become what they are by being used so often, they start to lose their meanings. They become trivial. The fact that they become trivial is the reason that I tend to not be a big fan of motivational posters. It’s not that what they say is not true so much as what’s being said is being marginalized by being mass produced. We become numb to their effects. So, having said that, this little post is going to be about three clichés. [Read more…]
Thanks to the wonderful people at Children’s Hospital who worked and guided us through the process, as well as allowed for it to happen despite the fact that the attic is not done. We are now officially licensed foster parents.
This has been a goal of ours since before moving to Wisconsin and a goal of Jessica’s since before I met her. Without a doubt, our family dynamic is going to be changing but we couldn’t be happier.
That’s it. Shortest post ever.
With everything that’s been going on, I have not had much of a chance to update everyone on a few things, the biggest thing being, where are we on the attic? You know . . . the attic that was supposed to be completed in June? Ya. . . That one.
